(Studio) Defense Secretary Melvin Laird appears before Senator For. Relations Committee to present Pentagon position on Moscow arms agreement and Defense Department need for more money.

(DC) [LAIRD - says last year Congress supported Defense Department strategic arms programs (incl. B-1 bomber and Trident submarine). Now asks for continuation in 1973 budget.] [Senator Stuart SYMINGTON - says Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) treaty means United States will spend more in arms, the opposites of what was hoped for.] [Senator Jacob JAVITS - wants to know what Admin. wants of Congress] [Senator William FULBRIGHT - calls Laird a genius at semantic confusion. For example, protective reaction strikes shown by General Lavelle to be plain old bombings.] Congress general approves Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) treaty, but there are strong objections to spending more money for more weapons.
