(Studio) McGovern wins California by smaller margin than polls predicted. Similar to margin won 4 years ago by late Senator Robert Kennedy. McGovern people pleased.
REPORTER: John Chancellor

(Los Angeles, California) When polls showed McGovern 20 points ahead in California, McGovern risked a few votes to campaign in NM, cut back on spending. Risk paid off with win in NM, savings in money, and clear victory in California. [MCGOVERN - says California campaign was rough, and his organization survived it by good margin.] He makes pledge similar to Eisenhower's to visit Korea, saying he will go to Hanoi, North Vietnam. [MCGOVERN - has no doubt he can negotiate a release of POWs, safety of American forces while withdrawing, and immediate end to war.] McGovern will campaign in final primary in New York, try to build support in the South.
