(Studio) Senator Thomas Eagleton becomes 1st Vice Presidential candidate to withdraw from ticket after accepting party's. nomination Columnist Jack Anderson apologizes for unconfirmed story that Eagleton has drunk driving record.

(DC) [Senator George McGOVERN - says Democrats need unity and full discussion of issues. Eagleton's continued candidacy would hinder both.] [EAGLETON - withdraws candidacy.] He signs letter of withdrawal to Democratic national committee with several pens, giving the souvenir pens to members of his staff. [ANDERSON - retracts story about Eagleton's drunk driving record.] [EAGLETON - says his spirits are high.]
