(Studio) Alabama Judge Frank Johnson's announcement of withdrawal from nomination to head FBI, for health reasons, noted.
REPORTER: Harry Reasoner

(DC) Background of Johnson's nomination and health problems given. [JOHNSON - will remain on bench. Plans to get well, but it's slow process.] [Attorney General BELL - will wait 2 weeks before beginning search for new director again.] Bell's discussion with present FBI director Clarence Kelley with regard to staying on till new director found, if not by Kelley's resignation date of January 1, noted. Selection panel's recommendations this summer to President Carter with regard to new director, and President's apparent dissatisfaction with list cited.
