(Studio) Comment with regard to role of Saudi Arabia in world.
REPORTER: Barbara Walters

(DC) President Carter's planned meeting with President Hafez al-Assad of Syria in Europe in May noted; will conclude mtgs. with all Mid. East's important leaders except Saudi Arabia. However, Saudis' goals and those of United States in Mid. East very close, so meeting not necessary at present. Saudis' influence with Hussein in expelling guerrillas from Jordan, with Sadat in throwing USSR out of Egypt, with Syria to intervene in Lebanon civil war in way that brings greater security to Israel and in OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) to keep oil prices down noted; are now reported putting money into keeping USSR out of northwest Africa and Somalia.
