(Studio) President Ford tells American Legion convention he'll ask for development of more nuclear weapons if no Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) agreement. Says detente doesn't give USSR license to fish in troubled waters. (with regard to Portugal).

(Minneapolis, Minnesota) [FORD - hopes to hold down nuclear spending, but if SALT agreement not reached, must recommend $2-3 billion for strategic arms. Concerned over Portugal's freedom. Wishes of moderate major subverted by determined, not representative, forces. Hopes 80% who support democrat will prevail. They must find solution without outside pressure.] While campaigning, Ford promises more military spending and less inflationary programs.
