(Studio) American Airlines DC-10 developed trouble upon takeoff in New York City and swerved to stop.
REPORTER: Tom Brokaw
(NYC) Most passengers slid down emergency chutes to get off plane. Pilot halted takeoff with 2 flat tires and fire in 1 engine. Plane carried crew of 13 and 216 passengers. Slid down slide.] [2nd PASSENGER - says jumped over side of chute to avoid flames. A lot of women with dresses had their legs burned.] Plane stopped 100 yds. from fence.
