(Studio) Govt. orders ban on sale of children's clothing treated with flame retardant chemical Tris, linked to cancer.
REPORTER: Harry Reasoner
(DC) Consumer Prod. Safety Commission votes to ban sales of Tris-treated items and product of them, but against recall of all such items already sold; evidence shows repeated washing removes most of cancer risk. [Commission chairperson John BYINGTON - doesn't believe garments already in use present unacceptable risk.] Materials often treated with Tris listed. Cost of ban, claimed by children's sleepwear industry, noted.
