REPORTER: Barbara Walters
(DC) President is asked about Democrat liberals' comments that his policies similar to predecessor's; George McGovern's feelings especially noted. [CARTER - doesn't think criticism justified; was actually only McGovern who made statement.] Question with regard to possibility of losing liberal support. [CARTER - says there's always that danger and some liberals difficult to please.] Carter says staff deserved recent raises and agrees with pollster Pat Caddell with regard to substituting substance for style. Is asked with regard to Nixon Watergate interview. [CARTER - didn't change opinion on Nixon; thinks Nixon violated law but that former president doesn't think he did.] President's answer to same question prior to Europe trip noted.
