(Studio) Report on Death Valley desert.
REPORTER: John Chancellor
(Death Valley) Film shows prevalent images of Death Valley. Desert burros may not be captured or killed and don't have natural enemies. They are destroying desert. Open pit strip mining done in desert. Anyone who wants to stake mining claim can do so. Valley designated national monument in 1933. Director of national parks then persuaded Congress to let mining continue. Senator passed bill banning future mining and delaying existing operations in Death Valley. House hasn't okayed bill yet. 200 new mining claims filed ea. year Damage noted. [Tenneco mining engineer Gregory SPARKS - proposes that this area be excluded from Monument boundaries.] [Park Service ranger, James THOMPSON - explains why Sparks' proposal wouldn't work.] Burros and mining ruining Death Valley.
