(Studio) Conservative Ronald Reagan picks liberal Pennsylvania Senator Richard Schweiker as his running mate.
REPORTER: John Chancellor

(Los Angeles, California) [REAGAN - announces his Vice President choice of Schweiker.] Reagan press secretary says Schweiker and Reagan agree on major issues and that Schweiker would help with N.E. Reagan and Schweiker met Saturday in California.

(DC) Schweiker is resigning as Ford delegate. [SCHWEIKER - says will be talking to Pennsylvania delegates about Reagan. Ford forces will be in trouble due to Reagan's Vice President pick. Carter will make peanut butter and jelly out of Ford campaign if campaign run as it has been.] [Senator John TOWER - can't imagine 2 people on a ticket more firmly affixed at opposite ends of the spectrum.] [Senator Jacob JAVITS - says combination is inconceivable.] [Senator Edward BROOKE - says choice speaks of political expediency, opportunism and a deal.] Aides to 3 Republican liberal Senators call Schweiker's acceptance of Reagan offer "sell-out." Pennsylvania delegates react cautiously.
