(Studio) James Schlesinger talks to congress committee with regard to Carter energy policy and energy department
REPORTER: David Brinkley
(DC) Schlesinger talks of need for energy department [SCHLESINGER - notes fuel shortage.] Some measures under consideration to conserve oil and natural gas listed. After hearing, Schlesinger is asked why administration policy stresses coal and nuclear energy, since while campaigning, Carter promised environmentalists nuclear energy would be last resort. [SCHLESINGER - says country is down to last resorts to get off oil and gas.] Schlesinger says Carter program tougher than either Nixon's or Ford's; Congress watered down those 2 and could do same to Carter's.
