(Studio) Despite calls from President Carter, Vice President Mondale and Mrs. Betty Ford, Florida state senate defeats passage of ERA. Only state to ratify it since 1975 is IN.
REPORTER: David Brinkley

(Tallahassee, Florida) Report on Florida senate debate and vote. [Senator David McCLAIN - cites opposition to ERA.] [Senator Lori WILSON - favors ERA.] [Feminist Betty FRIEDAN - says orgs. with influential women, like NEA, League of Women Voters, American Psychological Association and others, will begin economy boycott of Florida and other states which have defeated ERA.]

(Studio) ERA America is coordination of several orgs. supporting amendment. Spokesperson for organization, Rosalyn Baker is in Washington, DC studio. Anchor asks if she's surprised by Florida action.

(DC) [BAKER - knew it would be defeated. Says group will now look to 1978 elections with target states being North Carolina and Florida and will put money into pol. campaigns to get supporters in state legislature]

(Studio) Anchor asks about deadline and if she believes they'll get 3 states needed.

(DC) [BAKER - says deadline is March, 1979;believes 3 states will be gotten.]

(Studio) Anchor asks about economy action Betty Friedan mentioned.

(DC) [BAKER - says some groups, NEA, for example, have said they'll hold no convention in state not ratifying amendment.]
