(Studio) Senator filibuster against deregulation of natural gas prices has been succeeded by one for deregulation. In press conf., President Carter asks that action be taken, but opponents don't listen.
REPORTER: John Chancellor

(DC) During news conf., president says own reputation not only one on line with energy bill. [CARTER - doesn't think Senator will face possibility of allowing major legislature of year to be inconsequential or inadequate; they have reputations to think of.] Senator Robert Byrd has worked out compromise bill, in attempt to end filibuster against deregulation being carried out by Senators Abourezk and Metzenbaum; details of compromise listed. However, it's not accepted by Senators who will settle for nothing less than complete deregulation. Remarks by Barry Goldwater cited. [Henry BELLMON - notes some Senators upset with Carter for implying that those who supported him as candidate are in pockets of oil industry Says this is false.] Bellmon says Carter supported deregulation as candidate. Russell Long, who supports deregulation, has begun own filibuster.

(DC) Report on price increases for various uses of natural gas, according to ea. of 3 bills being debated; uses noted are bread-baking and heating, with Saint Louis as average city. Some Senators talk of compromise in doing nothing and letting prices stay same.
