(Studio) FDA (Food and Drug Administration) wants practice of giving beef cattle antibiotics in feed halted because of danger to humans.
REPORTER: David Brinkley
(DeKalb Cnty., Illinois) Scientists say practice could create new bacterium resistant to antibiotics, causing untreatable infection in humans. Reasons for use of antibiotics additives in feed for animals noted. Farmers are angry with regard to FDA (Food and Drug Administration) action. [Hog farmer Roger STEIMEL - cites financial trouble it would cause him and ultimate effects on prices.] FDA Commissioner Don. Kennedy says risk too great. [KENNEDY - notes practice creates resistant organisms that may transfer resistance to organisms causing human disease. Says use of antibiotics in animal feed could create situation in which there could be severe epidemic.]
