(Studio) Report on concerns of Rutherford, New Jersey, residents because of high incidence of deadly disease.
REPORTER: John Chancellor
(Rutherford, New Jersey) Unusu. large number of cancer cases reported in Rutherford, New Jersey, in last 3 yrs, stated; some have been children from Pierrepont Elem. School. Residents' concerns described. [MAN - talks to telephone caller re: mtg. to discuss situation.] Is noted that there are chemical plants near school, but that tests taken by health department reveal nothing unusu. Previous clusters of cancer cases in other cities, include Niles, Illinois, and Breckridge, Michigan, and scientists' inconclusive studies of them reported Vivian Cleffi's son Jimmy was one of 1st to die from cancer. [Mrs. CLEFFI - cites feelings that this isn't coincidence.]
