(Studio) Report on beginning of spoleto festival in Charleston, SC, based on similar festival in Italy, and its important to one American, in particular.

(Charleston, SC) Donna Randall's attendance at assembly in Philadelphia Junior high school at which orchestra played noted. [RANDALL - knew she had to play after seeing that performance.] Randall's successful audition for spoleto festival orchestra as only black in orchestra reported Relatively few blacks performing in symphony orchestras anywhere noted. [Spoleto music director Christopher KEENE - thinks blacks view symphonies as white establishment; wants to break that view down.] [RANDALL - discusses lack of blacks in symphonies and need and methods of creating interest in this type of music among blacks.]
