(DC) After sundown, which ends Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur, Senator will vote on natural gas price decontrol issue. President Carter wants to keep controls, oil and gas inds. fight for deregulation. Will be close vote.

(DC) Energy Secretary James Schlesinger lobbies with Senators in person while President phones them in effort to win votes. [Schlesinger shown talking with Senator John Melcher.] Details with regard to issue to go before Senator, amendment by James Pearson and Lloyd Bentsen, noted. Arguments of supporters, like J. Bennett Johnston, and opponents, like Howard Metzenbaum, cited. This isn't battle along party lines, rather between consuming and producing states, so vote too close to call.
