(Studio) Ronald Reagan's aides reported beginning background checks on possible running mates.

(Houston, Texas) Republican unity dinner noted; absence of George Bush and Governor William Clements mentioned. Clements' feud with Reagan's Texas campaign manager Ernest Angelo outlined; Clements said no longer being considered for vice president Presence of possible running mate Howard Baker mentioned. [REAGAN - campaigns. with regard to Democrats and tax cut.] Reagan aides, not wanting another blunder before conv., said keeping Reagan away from reporters; similar strategy just before losing Iowa caucuses to George Bush recalled.
