(Studio) Incr. of gang warfare in Los Angeles and earlier report on subject noted. Following report with regard to efforts to reduce violence.
REPORTER: Barbara Walters

(Los Angeles, California) Details concerning gangs and gang wars given; efforts of state and county youth workers to bring peace also detailed. Uneasy peace among 8 of 18 eastern Los Angeles gangs in recent mos. noted. Gang names mentioned. [Arkansas Gang MBR. - says it took more than one day for Vietnam War to stop and same goes for gang wars.] Efforts of former gang member and now cnty. youth worker Leo Cortez in campaign to bring peace among gangs described. [CORTEZ - talks to gang members about job openings.] Other problems in recreation and lack of community support outlined. [Gang MBR. - notes communities want to stop violence, but won't help out when gangs ask for it.] Police participation in attempts to decrease gang warfare described; example of work of officers Gil Carrillo and Art Ariano cited. [2nd Gang MBR. - states that if someone shoots at him, he'll shoot back.] State funding to help in warfare reduction efforts mentioned.
