(DC) Assistant defense secretary Rich Perle said possibly guilty of conflict of interest due to his relationship with Israeli arms dealer while at same time recommending that US Army purchase mortars from Israel rather than Great Britain; "New York Times" account outlined. [Courtesy "Meet the Press", PERLE - denies allegations.] Perle's letter to Army secretary in March, 1982, promoting Israeli mortars quoted on screen; Israeli mortar producer noted former client of Perle's. Pentagon said unable to explain having to purchase mortars from any foreign source.
