(DC) President Reagan reported ordering USS Nimitz on full alert while it was in port at Saint Thomas, Virgin Island, in response to Navy research ship stranded in Cuban waters. [Voice of radio ANNOUNCER - issues general recall of all crew.] No. personnel left behind mentioned. Details of Seaward Explorer's engine failure and drift into Cuban territorial waters reviewed; response of US consulate in Havana to Cuban navy's action outlined on screen. Coast Guard cutter Reliance reported retrieving Seaward Explorer. Defense Department spokesperson's criticism of introduction warships into relatively routine event noted.
