(Studio) Senator Edward Kennedy releases new detailed anti-ballistic missile study.
REPORTER: Howard K. Smith
(DC) anti-ballistic missile opponents afraid Kennedy-Nixon showdown would cost votes because of Republicans rallying to Nixon. Report released with no fanfare and no comment from Kennedy. Senator Jacob Javits opposes ABM. [JAVITS - comments on political implications of issue.] Authors, scientists, say anti-ballistic missile would speed arms race and won't work. Pentagon says report confusing, offers dangerous alternatives, and overstates problems.
