US order to evacuate platform before ensuing destruction quoted. [Defense Secretary Caspar WEINBERGER - says the oil rig was the most appropriate target because it had been used to mount radar surveillance, launch small boat attacks against nonbelligerent ships and to fire upon United States military helicopters.] Geography of area graphically shown.[Mil. analyst Geoffrey KEMP - says hitting a more significant target would have made allies nervous.] Policy of restraint said will be cast aside if Iran strikes again. United States official's comment that US prepared for war quoted.

[Senator John GLENN - says we do not want another Vietnam situation.] [Senator William BROOMFIELD - says all the Democrats have to do is pass a resolution discontinuing activity in Persian Gulf and they will see how the American people would disapprove.] [Senator Strom THURMOND - says US involvement has reached a stage from whence there is no turning back.] Belief that there is indeed no turning back mentioned.
