(Studio: Tom Brokaw) Navy Secretary James Webb reported resigning in protest of Defense Secretary Frank Carlucci's budget cuts. Report introduced.

(DC: Fred Francis) Webb reported resigning due to budget removing many ships from active naval duty. Webb's reputation as war hero and writer noted adding credibility to criticism. [WEBB - describes defense budget absorbing much of total cuts.] Webb's accusations with regard to Carlucci quoted. [WEBB - says going into next century unprepared.] Webb's remarks with regard to Carlucci quoted on screen. [Senator Carl LEVIN - praises Carlucci.] Webb's Persian Gulf criticism recalled. Reagan administration noted relieved by Webb's resignation. Many military experts reported sharing Webb's view that too much emphasis being placed upon Europe and not enough on emerging growth areas.
