(DC: John Cochran) Secretary of State James Baker reported selling his stock in Chemical Bank of New York, company that loans money to Third World countries. President Bush quoted with regard to pursuit of high ethical standards in government Baker recalled owning holdings in Texas banking company when he was confirmed as treasurer secretary [Last week, BAKER - comments on situation.] White House cnsl. C. Boyden Gray noted urging Baker to sell his stock "Washington Post" and "New York Times" articles quoted. Gray recalled resigning from communications company due to possible conflict of interest [Brookings Institution spokesperson Stephen HESS - comments on government ethics.] Confirmation problems of Defense Secretary-designate John Tower mentioned.
