(State Department: Andrea Mitchell) The up-and-down day for the White House as the countdown to war seems to be in its final stages reviewed; details given about Secretary of State Colin Powell’s presentation of his case for war and about the campaign of France, Germany & Russia against a second U.N. resolution. [POWELL – says recent intelligence shows Iraq is destroying only a portion of its banned weapons.] [Chief U.N. weapons inspector Hans BLIX – says tearing up the missile is real disarmament.] [French Foreign Minister Dominique De VILLEPIN† {thru translator} – says we will not allow a resolution that authorizes force.] [White House press secretary Ari FLEISCHER – says there will not necessarily be a veto of a U.N. resolution.]

(Studio: Tom Brokaw) Powell’s speech to the Center for Strategic & International Studies in which he presented his case against Iraq featured. [POWELL – says Iraq’s major goal is to divide the international community; comments on atrocities committed by Iraqi President Saddam Hussein; states he understands the hesitation to go to war; says we have done everything possible to avoid war.]
