(Washington: Andrea Mitchell) The efforts of the US & Britain to come up with a compromise resolution on Iraq to avoid defeat at the U.N. featured; details given of opposition by Security Council members because Bush raised the stakes by demanding regime change. [British Foreign Secretary Jack STRAW†- comments on a new proposal.] [U.N. Secretary General Kofi ANNAN – says we are encouraging people to seek a common ground.] [In February, BUSH – says complete disarmament will mean regime change.] [Secretary of State Colin POWELL – says Iraqi President Saddam Hussein is not complying.]

(White House: Campbell Brown) Bush’s news conference tonight previewed; details given of the goal to blunt Chief U.N. weapons inspector Hans Blix’s positive news of Iraqi cooperation and of Democratic criticism of Bush’s suggestion that the US will go to war without a U.N. resolution. [Senator Tom DASCHLE – says it’s a major problem for the US to go into a war alone.]

(Pentagon: Jim Miklaszewski) The challenges in finding Saddam if there is a war examined; details given of the military’s plans to capture Saddam; animated diagram shown of underground & hidden bunkers. [“Saddam: King of Terror” author Con COUGHLIN†- comments on Saddam’s protection; says Saddam will fight to the finish.] [NBC News special operations analyst Gen. Wayne DOWNING†- likens the hunt for Saddam to a rabbit hunt.] Reports that Saddam is buying US military uniforms to be worn by his own troops so they can commit atrocities on Iraqi citizens, which would be blamed on Americans, noted.
