(Baghdad: Richard Engel) The pre-election violence in Iraq that is believed to be caused by Sunni insurgents in Sunni Muslim areas featured; details given of attacks on US & Iraqi troops in Iskandiriyah, Baquba, Tarmiyah, Ramadi & Baghdad, where 3 schools designated as polling places were bombed; scenes shown of flyers warning people not to vote in Haditha and of an insurgent spray-painting a threat; anti-election & anti-US Internet videos shown. [Middle East analyst Simon HENDERSON†- states they have to make sure Sunnis are too scared to vote.]

George Casey as he inspected the situation in northern Iraq featured; scenes shown of Casey greeting US troops & Iraqi officials in bomb-damaged Mosul. [CASEY – says it’s the triumph of democracy over tyranny.] Senator Edward Kennedy’s call for the US military to be out of Iraq by 2006 noted. The ballot, which contains over 7,000 candidates, shown.
