(DC) Capitol Hill appearance today by former Environmental Protection Agency administration Anne Burford to testify on her withholding of Environmental Protection Agency documents sought by Congress examined; Burford noted claiming she favored releasing documents in question but was overruled by White House cnsl. Fred Fielding and Attorney General William French Smith; Burford's testimony noted indicating improper interference of White House and OMB in effort to protect business. [BURFORD - feels serious abuses occurred.] Issue of Burford's denial of cleanup grant for Stringfellow, California, waste site prior to 1982 election in effort to hurt then-Governor Jerry Brown recalled. [Representative Jim SLATTERY - quotes Burford about Stringfellow affair.] [BURFORD - feels grant would have been irresponsible.] Assessment of Burford's testimony by chairperson Representative John Dingell quoted.
