REPORTER: Peter Jennings
(DC) Disagreement between Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger and Secretary of State George Shultz on appropriate time to introduction United States troops into foreign policy situations examined. [WEINBERGER - cautions against enforcing foreign policy with military might too quickly.] His opposition to sending lightly armed Marines into Beirut recalled. [WEINBERGER - feels troops should be at combat status if used at all.] Shultz noted favoring use of troops as show of force alone. Weinberger's criteria for introduction troops into situation outlined on screen. [WEINBERGER - considers caution in sending troops overseas a moral imperative.]
