(DC) USS Nimitz, minus large number of crew, reported dispatched from Saint Thomas to Cuban waters to aid United States research vessel Seaward Explorer, stranded there after engine failure; details examined. [Saint Thomas radio ANNOUNCER - calls on all USS Nimitz crew to return to ship.] Coast Guard reported towing Seaward Explorer to safety after initial rescue by Cubans; anticipated overreaction to sending aircraft carrier to the rescue in what's considered a relatively routine matter noted.
