(DC) Attorney General William French Smith reported requesting special prosecutor's investigation of Attorney General-designate Edwin Meese's personal financial dealings and questions of conduct. Special prosecutors, under Ethics in Govt. Act passed after Watergate, recalled only named 3 times: Leon Silverman investigated Labor Secretary Raymond Donovan, Arthur Christy conducted inquiry of Hamilton Jordan and Gerald Gallinghouse investigated Tim Kraft. Details of those cases recalled; Meese's commitment to seeking Attorney General post noted.
