(Studio) Alabama Governor George Wallace is in critical but stable condition at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Springs, MD, near DC. police hold 1 suspect in shooting, a blond youth in his 20's. 52-yr.-old Wallace had just finished talking to a crowd at a shopping center in Laurel, MD, and had stepped from behind a bullet-proof podium when shots rang out.

Campaign worker Jack Ingram says would-be assassin kept shouting "Hey, George!" then stuck a gun in Wallace's stomach and fired. Doctors report 3 major wounds in leg, arm, and chest. By-standers jump on attacker. 3 other people suffer gunshot wounds. Suspect, injured, rushed by police to Lealand Memorial Hospital in Riverdale, MD. Prince George's County police say suspect is in police custody at hospital. Maryland State Police put out all-points bulletin for blue cadillac with Georgia license plates headed for Savage, MD.
