Mrs. Wallace hovers over husband. Security men wrestle with assailant. Campaign workers ask crowd to get back. A Secret Service agent injured, Governor moved to a station wagon. Gov's. State Trooper David Golden climbs on top of wagon with Secret Service agent, looking for way to get through crowd. Captain E.C. Dothard, Alabama State Trooper, plainclothesman, wounded. [Mrs. George MANGUM - says someone yelled "Governor Wallace, come shake my hand," and he did. Mrs. Mangum took bucket for contributions close to Governor Thought shots were firecrackers. She them saw Governor fall, bleeding. Captain Dothard and lady also hit.] [Press secretary, Billy Joe CAMP - rode to hospital with Governor He was conscious and in pain. Hospital says his condition is critical but stable, with wounds in chest, abdomen near spinal column. Says Governor tried to reassure his wife he was okay in ambulance.] Police report suspect is white, male, 25 to 30 years old, uninjured. Also wounded were: Nick Zarvos, Secret Service agent, shot in throat and in serious condition; Alabama Police Captain E.C. Dothard, not serious; and local woman, Gloria Thompson.

(Studio) Wallace had feared an attack upon himself since 1st presidential campaign in 1964. Last Friday he spoke to group at Harvard Club in New York City and mentioned problems of security. He, like all president candidates, traveled with contingent of Secret Service men, and had his own private bodyguards as well. He spoke from behind bullet-proof podium. Senator Edward Kennedy now accepts President Nixon's offer of Secret Service protection on temporary basis because of today's shooting.

Moynihan who served in Kennedy administration, says Kennedy assassination ushered in new age of violence in American Black civil rights leader Medgar Evens, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Senator Robert Kennedy all were killed. Now attempt on Wallace made, as on Huey Long, whom he resembles.

(DC) President Nixon calls shooting a senseless and tragic incident. Press secretary reports President called Mrs. Wallace at hospital to offer his prayers and hope for her husband's recovery. President offers Secret Service protection to Senator Edward Kennedy and Representative Shirley Chisholm. Senator Edward Kennedy says his heart and prayers go out to Governor Wallace and family. Says democracy in American scarred by senseless and unforgivable violence. Senator George McGovern in Michigan cancels campaign plans until further notice. Says he is shocked and dismayed. Senator Hubert Humphrey, campaigning in MD, rushes to hospital. Senator Edmund Muskie says he shares outrage of every citizen in detestable attack. Governor was favored in Maryland and Michigan primaries; still is. Large sympathy vote expected.

(Hue, South Vietnam) South Vietnam's counteroffensive north of Hue successful. South Vietnam Marines flown in by American copters for brief confrontation. They killed 250 North Vietnam soldiers, destroyed several tanks, sent regiment hiding or retreating north 60 government troops killed or wounded. [Captain Phil MORTON - says South Vietnam called in air strikes which destroyed tanks and guns.] [Major James BEAN - says attack throws North Vietnam off balance, and boosts South Vietnam morale.]
