Marines land on Koh Tang island at 7:15 to search for Mayaguez crew members Copters come under heavy fire from Khmer Rouge troops. At 8:30, Marines board Mayaguez; no crew mbrs. found. At 10:23, small boat approaches destroyer Wilson with Mayaguez crew. American war planes attack airbase on Cambodia's mainland to keep air attack from being launched on Marines; 17 Cambodian planes destroyed. At 4:40 a.m. Mayaguez crew aboard ship and steaming under own power toward Thailand. Marines attempt to withdraw, but come under heavy fire from Communist troops. At 9:10 a.m., operation complete. Pentagon still refuses to discuss casualties.
