Strike began when this school's board refused to reinstate teachers they fired last year [1 of cleared teachers Cliff ROSENTHAL - says open schools filled with scabs, draft dodgers and militants who have no regard for union and cause.] [Another cleared teacher Dan. GOLDBERG - says would like to go back to work here. Seems American system of justice should operate here also.] Schools staffed with non-union teachers. [Non-union teacher Peter WALLACK - says showed up because principal showed he wanted school open and people were going to run schools.] Another school in district open. 1,100 of 1,800 attend. 89 of 91 teachers there. [Principal Percy JENKINS - says there is element of black pride that keeps schools open. 30-35% Puerto Ricans in neighborhood and they have same kind of pride. Negroes and Puerto Ricans show they're capable of running own affairs.] Schools staying open victory for those who feel locals can rule schools and blacks.
