[Senator Adlai STEVENSON - says after spending time and money on system, American may be able to consume less than 1/2 of Alaska oil.] Least costly way to get oil from Alaska to Midwest and East coast is by tanker from Valdez, AK, to Long Beach, California, and build new pipeline to Texas. California officials have environmental objections to plan and authority to stop it. Other plans: via Washington pipeline to Midwest; shipping through Panama Canal; or shipping oil to Japan to sell or exchange for Middle East oil delivered to United States E. coast.
